MASTER THESIS IN GEOMATICS SCIENCES
Integration of surface elements in a drainage network
Université Laval, Québec, Canada
Context and objective
Current technologies make it possible to produce hydrographic networks from very high-resolution digital terrain models (DTM) (1 m²) over very large areas (> thousands of km²). These DEMs are grids obtained by interpolation of lidar points. The drainage network is then extracted as a linear network. Streams are organised in the form of a hierarchy according to the direction of flow making it possible to automatically extract information on the structure of the network and on the catchment areas. However, surface elements (lakes, wetlands) are not included in this network.
The objective of the research project is to develop an approach to integrate certain surface elements into the network. These elements can be identified from the digital terrain model or integrated from external data sources. They will enrich the data structure while maintaining the consistency of the information (connection with linear elements, direction of flow).
This MSc thesis is part of a larger project, supervised by Éric Guilbert, Thierry Badard and Sylvain Jutras. The student will join a team of four master’s and doctoral students. His/her work will be integrated into the platform being developed within the team.
The candidate should have a profile related to spatial data modelling with a bachelor’s degree in geomatics, computer science or a related field. A good command of programming tools is essential. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
Funding is provided for two years by a grant from the Fonds de la Recherche du Québec Nature et Technologies, team projects.
This master’s project will take place in Quebec, on the Université Laval campus. The student will be a member of the Research Centre on Geospatial Data and Intelligence (CRDIG) and will have access to computing resources from its laboratories.
